Pompeii

I cannot swallow.
Words coat my tongue like bitter ash.
They spew from my mouth
and bury us.

You stand, arms folded,
spine an exclamation mark.
My lips carve one thin line
from a stony face.

When we have been statues
for a thousand years,
will we remember
who started this?
