Aftermath
(for Lew and Linda)
When the water recedes
there will be time to grieve, to sift
through pieces of memory, salvage
what can be saved. There is nothing
to do now, but watch abandoned
cars and propane tanks bob
beneath incongruent sunshine. The house
could not contain its wild guest. It forced
new channels through living room, kitchen,
across the road and there is nothing left
to do between the scramble to reach
higher ground and the weight of loss.
